Green Bay Packers rookie running back Samkon Gado was named the NFC's Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday following his breakout performance in Week 10.
Gado ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries in the Packers' 33-25 road win over the Atlanta Falcons. The victory was just the second for Green Bay (2-7) this season, while the Falcons (6-3) fell out of a first-place tie with the Carolina Panthers in the NFC South.
Gado was signed to the Packers' practice squad on October 17, but injuries to Ahman Green, Najeh Davenport and Tony Fisher have given the Liberty product an opportunity to step in.
Minnesota Vikings safety Darren Sharper was named the Defensive Player of the Week courtesy of his three-interception, one-touchdown performance in a 24-21 win over the New York Giants. His second pick of the game was returned for a TD and his final pick stalled a Giants' drive at the two-yard line.
Chicago cornerback Nathan Vasher was named the Special Teams Player of the Week. Vasher returned a missed field goal an NFL-record 108 yards for a touchdown as the Bears defeated the San Francisco 49ers 17-9 at a windy Soldier Field.
With the 49ers up 3-0 and three seconds remaining until halftime, Joe Nedney attempted a 52-yard field goal. However, the ball fell short and Vasher caught it eight yards deep in the end zone and then started up the left sideline before cutting across the field and changing his direction up to the right side, where he received several key blocks and scampered into the end zone.
Gado, Sharper and Vasher are all first-time winners of the player of the week honor.
