Phillies send Thome to White Sox for Rowand

The Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to trade first baseman Jim Thome and cash to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for outfielder Aaron Rowand. Both teams are awaiting physical results from both players and approval from the commissioner's office before the deal can become official. The deal reportedly involves two minor league pitchers heading to the Phillies, 20-year-old lefthander Giovany Gonzalez and 22-year-old southpaw Daniel Haigwood. Both are starters. Thome hit .207 with seven homers and 30 RBI for the Phillies this past season. He missed 103 games because of back and elbow injuries and became expendable when Ryan Howard emerged at first base. The 35-year-old Thome, a native Peoria, Illinois, is owed $43.5 million over the next three seasons and the Phillies will reportedly pay nearly half that amount to the White Sox. Thome played the first 12 seasons of his career in Cleveland and could possibly replace free agent Paul Konerko at first base. Thome could also replace Frank Thomas as the team's designated hitter. Howard had 22 homers and 63 RBI, hitting .288 in 88 games, on his way to NL Rookie of the Year honors. In three seasons with the Phillies, Thome hit 96 homers and drove in 266 runs. The four-time All-Star also missed time in 2004 with a wrist injury and is becoming more injury-prone as his career continues. Rowand fills a center field void for the Phillies. He hit .270 with 13 homers and 69 RBI in 157 games last season for Chicago, which captured its first World Series title since 1917. He also posted a .992 fielding percentage and stole 16 bases this past season. Rowand will likely become the everyday centerfielder in Philadelphia, as Kenny Lofton left via free agency. Outfielders Jason Michaels and Shane Victorino will also see outfield action. Gonzalez split last season with the Single-A Kannapolis Intimidators and Single-A advanced Winston-Salem Warthogs. He went 5-3 with a 1.87 ERA at Kannapolis, and compiled an 8-3 mark and 3.56 ERA at Winston-Salem. Haigwood compiled an 8-2 mark with a 3.77 ERA in 15 starts at Winston-Salem early in 2005 before heading to Double-A Birmingham, where he went 6-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 11 starting assignments. Winston-Salem pitching coach Sean Snedeker describes Gonzalez as a short-frame lefty with three good pitches, a curve, changeup and fastball. Gonzalez has been known to consistently reach 91 mph with his fastball and could grow into a situational lefty in the bullpen upon his arrival in the majors. Snedeker also says Haigwood changes speeds very well and made tremendous strides in 2005 with his command of the strike zone.
