The New York Mets officially acquired veteran first baseman Carlos Delgado and cash from the Florida Marlins in exchange for first baseman Mike Jacobs, minor-league pitcher Yusmeiro Petit and minor- league third baseman Grant Psomas.
The trade news first broke on Wednesday with reports saying that Florida also sent $7 million in cash to the Mets to cover the part of the remaining $48 million left on Delgado's original four-year, $52 million contract that he signed prior to last season.
Last year Delgado batted .301 with 33 homers and 115 RBI while playing in 144 games. His RBI total from the 2005 campaign is more than any Met has reached since 1999 (Mike Piazza - 124 and Robin Ventura - 120).
"One of our goals this off-season was to acquire a big bat for the middle of our lineup," said Mets General Manager Omar Minaya. "Carlos Delgado certainly fits that description. He'll be a superb fit for our line-up."
Delgado, who spent his first 12 seasons with Toronto, is a lifetime .284 hitter with 369 home runs and 1,173 RBI.
A 33-year-old native of Puerto Rico, Delgado is a two-time All-Star and finished second in AL MVP voting in 2003, when he hit .302 with 42 homers and 145 runs batted in.
Delgado, who does not have the power to veto a trade, rejected a deal from the Mets last year that would have reportedly paid him slightly more money.
The Marlins will get a young player in Jacobs, 25, who batted .310 with 11 homers in only 100 at-bats last season after he was called up in mid-August.
Petit, who was considered to be the Mets' top pitching prospect, went 9-3 with a 2.91 ERA last year while playing in Double-A Binghamton.
Psomas, 23, split time this season between Hagerstown of the South Atlantic League and St. Lucie of the Florida State League, both Single-A affiliates. He batted .300 (105-350) with 66 runs, 27 doubles, two triples, 19 home runs and 54 RBI in 99 games at Hagerstown. He was elected to the mid-season SAL All-Star squad and participated in the Home Run Derby, which he won. At St. Lucie, he hit .305 (36-118) with 15 runs scored, 10 doubles, one home run and 15 RBI in 38 games.
