Fred Funk, playing the Skins Game for the first-time ever, won the 12th and 18th holes Sunday to close out a dominating performance at the Trilogy Golf Club at La Quinta.
Funk's birdie on the par-five 18th gave him six more skins as he routed the field. Funk, winner of this year's Players Championship, ended with 15 skins and $925,000.
World No. 1 Tiger Woods was the only other player to get on the board. He won the third hole Saturday, when Funk played the hole with a skirt on after being out-driven by Annika Sorenstam, for the first three skins. Woods was shut out from there, but ended with $75,000.
Sorenstam, the top player in the women's game, was completely shutout for the second straight year.
Fred Couples, who owns the most skins in event history, was blanked as well after earning 11 skins and his fifth win at this tournament in 2004. Couples was skinless after nine holes last year, but came back to win with a huge Sunday performance.
The 18th hole was worth six skins and $550,000 meaning the winner of the hole would have been the top money earner.
Funk, one of the shorter hitters on the PGA Tour, knocked his second shot on the green. He rolled his 25-foot eagle putt within inches of the cup and tapped in for birdie.
"I played good, but still its the timing," said Funk, who collected the second-best payday and second-best skins total in event history. "There just wasn't a lot of putts made. I can't believe it."
Couples had a six-foot birdie putt, but it slid by the left edge. With Sorenstam out of the hole, Woods was unable sink his short birdie putt to force a playoff.
"I didn't hit the quality shots I needed to hit at the right time and Funky did," said Woods. "Funky played two beautiful shots here on the last hole. He two-putted and forced us to make a birdie and we didn't."
Funk became the oldest winner in event history.
"I would have given Tiger 95 percent that he would have made that last putt," said Funk. "Freddy (Couples) hit a lot of great putts and he didn't make anything."
Couples and Woods both knocked their approach shots stiff at the 10th as the hole was halved with birdies. At the short par-three 11th, Couples nearly hit the flagstick with his tee shot. However, his birdie putt from seven feet away slid by the right edge, as the hole was halved with pars.
At the 12th, Funk sank a six-foot birdie putt to collect the first three skins of the day and another $150,000. Sorenstam and Woods had both missed their birdie putts, while Couples had a birdie putt from the fringe, but could not convert either.
Sorenstam and Couples halved the 13th with pars, before each of the four players parred the following two holes.
Three of the four performers, excluding Couples, birdied the par-five 16th. Woods had a 22-foot eagle putt that came up inches short of the cup.
"Don't do that. Don't, don't," Woods yelled at the ball as it came up short.
"Nice lag," Sorenstam teased Woods.
With five skins on the line at the par-three 17th, Couples and Woods two- putted for par to create the big payday at the last. Funk played the 17th poorly as he dumped two tee shots in the water.
Couples was shut out for the first time in 11 appearances at the event.
"We all had great chances, but Funk did some damage out there," said Couples.
