Baltimore Orioles catcher Javy Lopez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, one day after breaking a bone in his right hand.
Lopez was injured while behind the plate during the club's 3-2 victory over Seattle on Tuesday night. He suffered the injury after taking a foul tip by the Mariners' Bret Boone off his unprotected hand in the third inning.
The 34-year-old Lopez, a three-time All-Star, is batting .273 with seven home runs and 22 RBI in 42 games this season.
Lopez, a native of Ponce, Puerto Rico, is in his 14th major league season. He spent the first 12 years of his career in Atlanta before signing with the Orioles as a free agent on January 6, 2004.
For his career, he has a .290 average with 244 homers and 802 RBI.
In other team news, catcher Sal Fasano was signed as a free agent. Fasano, who was designated for assignment on Tuesday, cleared waivers earlier Wednesday. He then declined an outright assignment and elected to opt for free agency.
Fasano hit .333 with two homers and three RBI in four games with Triple-A Ottawa.
