Mariners ink Everett

The Seattle Mariners have found a new designated hitter by coming to terms on a one-year contract with Carl Everett. The deal includes a club option for 2007. The 34-year-old Everett, a switch hitter, hit .251 with 23 home runs and 87 RBI last season for the World Series champion Chicago White Sox. A two-time All-Star, Everett was the designated hitter in 107 games for the White Sox last season. He also didn't commit an error in over 22 starts in the outfield. "Carl will primarily be the DH, but will also play some in our outfield," Mariners manager Mike Hargrove said. "Having him in my lineup gives us some of the left-handed sock and run production we were looking for." Everett was second on the White Sox in RBI and third on the team in home runs. He hit 18 of his 23 homers and drove in 59 of his 87 runs left-handed. During his career, Everett has also played for Florida, the New York Mets, Houston, Boston, Texas and Montreal, and has a .274 average with 191 homers and 759 RBI. Everett batted .300 in the 2005 postseason, including .444 during Chicago's World Series sweep of the Astros. He is one of just six switch-hitters in big league history to record 100 RBI in each league, joining Bobby Bonilla, Eddie Murray, Ted Simmons, Ken Singleton and J.T. Snow.
