Dodgers sign Mueller

The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed free agent third baseman Bill Mueller to a two-year contract, the team announced Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it's reportedly worth $9.5 million. "Every successful team has true baseball players with the makeup, drive and desire of Bill Mueller," said Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti. "His ability to hit from both sides of the plate will give (manager Grady Little) additional maneuverability." The 34-year-old Mueller batted .295 with 10 home runs and 62 RBI in 150 games last season with the Boston Red Sox, where he spent the last three seasons. In 2003 with the Red Sox, Mueller won the American League batting tile after he hit .326 in addition to his career-highs in homers (19) and RBI (85). "I've known both Ned Colletti and Grady Little for years and I respect them both immensely and thank them for this opportunity," said Mueller, who played under Little with the Red Sox in 2003. "I'm really excited about the direction the Dodgers are headed and look forward to some great seasons ahead of us here in Los Angeles." Mueller, along with newly-signed shortstop Rafael Furcal, will help construct a new left side of the infield for the Dodgers, who had trouble replacing Adrian Beltre last season after he signed with the Seattle Mariners as a free agent. Beltre clubbed 48 homers and 121 RBI in 2004 with Los Angeles. In comparison, the Dodgers started seven different players at third base last season, with Antonio Perez and Mike Edwards starting the most games at the hot corner (33 games). Those seven players combined to hit 29 home runs. Mueller should help, as the switch-hitter holds a .292 career batting average with 82 homers and 478 RBI in 1,184 games with the Red Sox, San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs.
