Yankees add veteran reliever Myers

The New York Yankees announced the signing of free-agent reliever Mike Myers to a two-year, $2.4 million contract on Thursday. Myers told MLB.com during last week's winter meetings in Dallas that he had accepted the Yankees offer, but the deal did not become official until the durable lefthander completed a physical. An 11-year major-league veteran, Myers spent the past 1 1/2 seasons with New York's rival, the Boston Red Sox, and finished 3-1 with a 3.13 earned run average in 65 games last season. He held lefthanded hitters to a .158 batting average and an on-base percentage of .198. Myers, who was not offered salary arbitration by the Red Sox at last week's deadline, fills a glaring need for a southpaw in the Yankee bullpen. New York tried Mike Stanton, Buddy Groom, Alan Embree and Wayne Franklin in that role last year, none of whom were effective. The 36-year-old, who has also pitched with Florida, Detroit, Milwaukee, Colorado, Arizona and Seattle, owns a 4.30 ERA and 14 saves in 749 career outings. Myers has appeared in at least 64 games every year since 1996. Myers joins a new-look Yankee relief corps that also includes hard-throwing righthander Kyle Farnsworth, who signed a three-year contract with New York earlier this offseason.
