The Baltimore Orioles placed starting pitcher Erik Bedard on the 15-day disabled list with a strained knee ligament on Thursday.
Bedard has been pitching with a strained medial collateral ligament in his left knee for the last couple of starts. The lefthander last pitched on Saturday, tossing seven shutout innings in a win over Philadelphia.
Bedard has won five straight decisions and is 5-1 with a 2.08 ERA in nine starts this season. Over his winning streak, he has yielded only four earned runs and has struck out 41 in 44 innings over six starts.
Sidney Ponson will move up a day to start in place of Bedard on Friday.
Baltimore is expected to call up pitcher Hayden Penn from Bowie of the Eastern League to take Bedard's roster spot. Penn was 3-3 with a 3.12 ERA in nine starts with the Baysox. He compiled 58 strikeouts and only 15 walks in 49 innings pitched.
