The Boston Red Sox signed right-handed pitcher Rudy Seanez to a one-year contract with a club option for the 2007 season on Tuesday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Seanez went 7-1 with a 2.69 ERA in 57 relief appearances for the San Diego Padres last season. He set career highs in wins, appearances, innings pitched (60.1) and strikeouts (84), while his ERA was his lowest since posting a 2.66 mark with the Dodgers in 1994. He walked just 22 batters and held opponents to a .222 batting average.
Seanez, who passed a physical Tuesday morning to make the deal official, made nine relief appearances for the Red Sox in 2003. He went 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA with Boston that season.
He has a career 27-20 mark with 11 saves and a 4.12 ERA in 380 appearances over 15 seasons. He has also pitched for Cleveland (1989-91), Los Angeles (1992, 1994-95), San Diego (1993, 2001, 2005), Atlanta (1998-2001), Texas (2002), Boston (2003), Kansas City (2004) and Florida (2004).
