The Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball, Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League and Jackson County officials agreed on Thursday to a $575 million renovation project for the Truman Sports Complex. A majority of the funding will come from taxpayers. As a result, voters will decide in an April 4 election whether or not to okay the 3/8 cent county sales tax levy. "This is a great day for Jackson County and Kansas City," said County Executive Katheryn Shields. "We have finally been able to get what Jackson County citizens have told us they want regarding the future of the Chiefs and the Royals in Kansas City -- significant investment from the teams, caps on public obligations, and new long term leases. I want to thank Lamar Hunt, David Glass, Mike Smith, and each and every member of the negotiating teams for their hard work that helped make these agreements possible." The Royals will use $25 million of their own money for renovations to Kauffman Stadium. Plus, the team will also pay for any additional construction cost overruns. Total costs of the Kauffman Stadium project is expected to be around $250 million. The Chiefs would contribute $75 million for their renovations to Arrowhead Stadium. The State of Missouri would also chip in with $50 million in tax credits. The renovations at Arrowhead are expected to run around $325 million. The Chiefs announced earlier this year that the NFL has awarded the franchise a Super Bowl if certain upgrades are made to the stadium. One of those upgrades would most likely have to include a roof. Leases would also be signed to keep the Royals and Chiefs in Kansas City through 2031.
