The Kansas City Royals have signed free agent outfielder Reggie Sanders to a two-year contract.
According to The Kansas City Star, Sanders' deal is worth $10 million.
Sanders, 38, was also believed to be considering playing with Cleveland, but ultimately accepted the Royals' offer because of the team's commitment to the future.
This offseason the Royals have already opened up their checkbook to a slew of free agents, including second baseman Mark Grudzielanek, starting pitchers Scott Elarton and Mark Redman, first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz and catcher Paul Bako.
Sanders had spent the previous two seasons with St. Louis where he helped lead the team to a pair of playoff appearances, including a spot in the 2004 World Series where the Cards were swept by Boston.
In 2005, Sanders batted .271 with 21 homers and 54 RBI, but played in only 93 games due to a broken bone in his leg.
For his career, the 15-year veteran has a .267 average with 292 home runs and 923 RBI while playing with Cincinnati (1991-98), San Diego (1999), Atlanta (2000), Arizona (2001), San Francisco (2002), Pittsburgh (2003) and St. Louis.
Sanders, who has never played in the American League, has one World Series ring (2001) and has appeared in 14 postseason series.
The Royals also signed right-handed pitcher Joe Mays to a one-year deal. The 30-year-old has spent his entire six-year major league career with the Minnesota Twins and this past season went 6-10 with a 5.65 ERA in 31 games, 26 of which were starts.
