The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired pitchers Jae Seo and Tim Hamulack from the New York Mets in exchange for pitchers Duaner Sanchez and Steve Schmoll on Wednesday.
Seo, 28, went 8-2 with a 2.59 ERA in 14 starts with the Mets in 2005. He went 4-0 with a 1.75 ERA in August and also posted a 5-0 mark at home for the season.
The South Korean broke into the majors with New York in 2002 and has compiled a lifetime 22-24 record and 3.85 ERA in 71 games (66 starts).
Hamulack, 29, is a career minor-leaguer, spending 10 seasons traveling on a bus before making it to the big leagues for the first time last season. The Mets purchased his contract on September 1 and he made his debut the following day against Florida, retiring the only batter he faced, Carlos Delgado.
In six appearances with New York, Hamulack allowed six runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings and had no decisions.
"With the addition of Seo and Hamulack, we have added some depth to our pitching staff," said Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti. "Seo's had success as a starter and is another option for us in the rotation. He knows how to pitch and has a great work ethic. Hamulack has developed to the point of being a strong candidate for a left-handed role in our bullpen."
Sanchez, 26, was 4-7 with a 3.73 ERA in 79 games for the Dodgers in 2005. He ranked tied for second in the National League in appearances and assumed the closer's role in August, converting all eight of his save opportunities through the remainder of the season. The right-hander expects to serve as the Mets' top setup man this coming year.
"Solidifying our bullpen was one of our objectives during the off-season," said Mets' General Manager Omar Minaya. "We took a major step in that direction when we signed Billy Wagner. Now we feel we've fortified our bullpen even more with the acquisition of Duaner Sanchez and Steve Schmoll, two talented young pitchers."
Schmoll, 25, went 2-2 with a 5.01 ERA with three saves in 48 appearances last year. Schmoll also spent time at Triple-A Las Vegas and compiled a 0-3 record and 4.78 ERA with five saves in 22 games.
