The Carolina Panthers will not have running back DeShaun Foster available for next week's NFC Championship game, as the team's leading rusher fractured his right ankle during Sunday's 29-21 victory over Chicago in the divisional round.
Foster suffered the injury after being tackled by Bears' linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer on the Panthers' opening possession of the second half. He finished with 54 yards on 16 carries.
The oft-injured back rushed for 151 yards on 27 attempts in last week's 23-0 win over the New York Giants in the wild-card segment of the NFC playoffs despite being bothered by a nagging turf toe ailment.
Nick Goings, who began the season as the team's third-string back behind Stephen Davis and Foster, will receive the bulk of the work when the Panthers visit the Seattle Seahawks for the conference crown next Sunday.
Foster took over the starting duties late in the year when Davis was sidelined with a season-ending knee injury. He ended the regular season with 879 yards on 205 carries and two rushing touchdowns over 15 games.
Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers also left Sunday's contest after hurting his right shoulder in the fourth quarter, but the injury isn't expected to keep him out of next weekend's tilt.
