Fitting the Bill: Buffalo tabs Jauron as head coach

The Buffalo Bills introduced Dick Jauron as their new head coach on Monday. Jauron returns to the Bills after stops in Green Bay, Jacksonville, Chicago and Detroit. The 55-year-old Jauron was a defensive assistant with Buffalo in 1985. "We'll do all we can to work together to get this thing where everybody wants it to be," said Jauron, who became the 14th head coach in franchise history. "The fact is that you have to be multiple in whatever you do. The name of our game is to win." He spent the last two seasons with Detroit as defensive coordinator and completed the 2005 campaign as interim head coach of the Lions after Steve Mariucci was fired in November. The Lions were 1-4 under Jauron and finished with a 5-11 record. Jauron went 35-46 in five seasons as head coach of the Chicago Bears from 1999 through 2003 and was the NFL Coach of the Year in 2001 following a 13-3 finish, the only year in which he had a winning record. Prior to his stint in Chicago, Jauron was the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1995-98. He was a defensive assistant with Green Bay for nine years after his lone season with Buffalo. Jauron takes over for Mike Mularkey, who coached the Bills the last two seasons before stepping down for personal issues. Buffalo went 14-18 overall with Mularkey, including last year's 5-11 disappointment. Mularkey apparently didn't like the direction the club was heading after the firing of general manager Tom Donahoe and is now the offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins. Meanwhile, Jauron will become Buffalo's fourth head coach since Marv Levy retired following the 1997 season. Levy, who guided the Bills to four Super Bowls in the early 1990s, returned to the organization earlier this month as general manager. "We weren't selecting an offensive coach or a defensive coach. We were selecting the best head coach," Levy said of the hiring. "He is going to be a head coach and not invest himself in one area."
