Ryan Newman broke his own track record and captured the pole for Sunday night's Coca Cola 600 at the Lowe's Motor Speedway.
Newman circled the 1.5-mile speedway in a record 27.981 seconds (192.988 m.p.h.). His old mark was 28.590 seconds (188.887 m.p.h.) set last fall.
The pole victory was Newman's fourth of the season and 31st of his 128-race Cup career (24.21%).
"A great run for us, the Alltel Dodge was quick," said Newman, the first Nextel Cup driver under 28 seconds at Charlotte. "I hope we're that quick Sunday night."
Starting on the front row with Newman will be "singer" Jeff Gordon, who posted a second-best time of 28.136 seconds. Gordon may not be able to sing "Take me out to the Ballgame" very well, but the Hendrick Motorsports driver knows how to get around a racetrack.
Twenty-six of 92 races held on the 1.5-mile high-speed oval have been won from the front row.
Matt Kenseth (28.234) and Kasey Kahne (28.305) will start in row two.
Points leader Jimmie Johnson has seven starts at Lowe's, collecting a total of three wins including the last two, and six consecutive top-10s. He will begin fifth in the 43-car field.
A total of 22 drivers broke the old mark, including 2005 Nextel All-Star Challenge winner Mark Martin (starting 13th) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (starting 15th).
Kyle Petty will make his 725th career Nextel Cup start, but 10 drivers failed to make the field including Boris Said, Bobby Hamilton Jr. and Jason Leffler.
Chevrolet has won the last four events, three by Johnson. Owner Rick Hendrick has earned 11 wins among five different drivers at Lowe's.
The 400-lap race is the longest of the season in the Nextel Cup Series. It is scheduled to begin on Sunday evening at
