Red Sox reach terms with Beckett, Crisp; sign Gonzalez

The Boston Red Sox agreed to deals with two of their key offseason acquisitions Monday, as starting pitcher Josh Beckett and outfielder Coco Crisp both came to terms on one-year contracts and avoided arbitration. In addition, the club signed free agent shortstop Alex Gonzalez. Financial terms were not disclosed for any of the deals. Although the Boston Globe reported Sunday that Beckett's contract was worth $4.325 million. The right-hander can become a free agent following the 2007 season. Acquired by the Red Sox in November from the Florida Marlins, Beckett filed for arbitration and wanted $4.9 million, but the Red Sox countered with a $3.75 million offer. Boston dealt four prospects to the Marlins for Beckett, third baseman Mike Lowell and relief pitcher Guillermo Mota. Mota was then sent to Cleveland as part of a package for Crisp, reliever David Riske and catcher Josh Bard. Beckett, selected as the second overall pick by the Marlins in the 1999 amateur draft, went 15-8 with a 3.38 ERA in 29 starts last season. The 25- year-old was bothered by tendinitis in his throwing shoulder for the last two months of the season. He was on the disabled list twice in 2005, once with a left oblique strain and again with a blister on the middle finger of his throwing hand. The Spring, Texas native has been on the DL nine times in his career, with six of those stints being blister-related. He owns a 41-34 career record with a 3.46 ERA in 106 games (103 starts). Crisp, who will man center field following the free-agent departure of Johnny Damon to the New York Yankees, hit a career-best .300 with 16 home runs, 69 runs batted in and 15 stolen bases with Cleveland in 2005. The 26-year-old switch-hitter owns a career .287 average with 35 homers, 176 RBI and 54 steals over four major-league seasons, all with the Indians. Gonzalez comes to Boston after spending the first eight years of his career with the Marlins. He replaces Edgar Renteria, who was sent to Atlanta earlier this off-season. Gonzalez, 29, hit .264 with five homers and 45 RBI with a .974 fielding percentage in 130 games last season. His best power year came in 2004 when he had career-bests of 23 homers and 79 RBI. He is a career .245 hitter with 81 homers and 375 RBI. To make room on the 40-man roster for Gonzalez, the Red Sox designated first baseman Roberto Petagine for assignment.
