Padres introduce Piazza

The San Diego Padres officially introduced Mike Piazza, the game's all-time greatest hitting catcher, to fans and media on Monday. Last Tuesday, the club announced that it agreed to a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2007 with Piazza. The deal is reportedly worth $2 million for the first year and another $8 million for the second. "I've always admired how Mike has played the game," said Padres manager Bruce Bochy. "He's always played it hard. He's always been a leader out there. He plays the game right." Piazza, 37, is coming off a season that saw him hit a career-worst .251 with 19 homers and 62 RBI in 113 games for the New York Mets. "I'm just so honored and I appreciate and thank their confidence in me," Piazza said. "I'm going to do whatever it takes to contribute to this ball club. I'm very confident we can get back to the playoffs and beyond." Piazza, who will be representing Italy in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, is a career .311 hitter with 397 homers and 1,223 RBI over 14 big league seasons. His 376 homers while serving as catcher is the most for any player at the position in the history of the game.
