Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Mark Prior has a fracture in his right arm, suffered Friday when a line drive hit him near his elbow.
The 24-year-old Prior was hurt in the fourth inning when Rockies leadoff hitter Brad Hawpe lined a shot back toward the mound. The ball deflected off Prior's arm and into the air. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez caught the ball on the fly for an out, but Prior immediately grabbed his arm near the elbow and fell to the ground. Initial X-rays were negative, but an MRI has revealed a slight fracture.
Todd Wellemeyer took over for Prior, who was charged with one run on two hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three.
Friday marked the ninth start of the campaign for Prior. He owns a 4-1 record this year with a 2.93 ERA. The righthander began the 2005 season on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow.
Wellemeyer was credited with the win, as the Cubs posted a 10-3 triumph over the Rockies. He tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits, while walking three and striking out two.
