Defending tournament champion Amelie Mauresmo defeated top seed and world No. 1 Kim Clijsters to capture the final of the $600,000 Proximus Diamond Games.
The world No. 2 Mauresmo battled back after dropping the first set to hand the Belgian star a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 defeat. The Frenchwoman has now won 15 straight matches and netted $95,500 for the victory.
Mauresmo beat Venus Williams in last year's final here.
It was Mauresmo's third title this season including her win at the Australian Open last month, the second seed's first-ever Grand Slam title. She also claimed a title in Paris last week at the Open Gaz de France.
By virtue of her performance in Antwerp, Mauresmo became the fastest woman ever to earn $1 million in season earnings. She outperformed Justine Henin- Hardenne's 2004 time by over a month.
"It's been a great start to the year, and I hope I can keep it going," Mauresmo said. "I had a tough start to the match, but I was just trying to hang in there. When I got the break back early in the second set it began to turn my way, and I increased in confidence, and got better and better."
Clijsters, meanwhile, was appearing in her first tournament since retiring in the final set of her Aussie Open semis match against Mauresmo. Clijsters won the championship here in 2004 and was runner-up the previous year.
Clijsters earned $51,000 for finishing in second in the battle between the top two players in women's tennis.
"I was surprised to get to the final this week, so soon after my injury in Melbourne," Clijsters said. "But my recovery is going to take time. It's not going to come immediately."
