Prior placed on disabled list

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Mark Prior was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a non-displaced fracture of his right elbow. The 24-year-old Prior suffered the injury during the fourth inning of Friday's game against Colorado. Brad Hawpe led off the frame for the Rockies and lined a shot toward the mound. The ball nailed Prior on his pitching arm and deflected into the air. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez caught the ball for an out, but Prior immediately grabbed his right arm near the elbow and fell to the ground. Initial X-rays were negative, but an MRI exam revealed the fracture. He could be sidelined for 6-8 weeks. Todd Wellemeyer took over for Prior, who was charged with one run on two hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three. Friday marked the ninth start of the campaign for Prior. He owns a 4-1 record this year with a 2.93 ERA. The righthander began the 2005 season on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow. Wellemeyer was credited with the win, as the Cubs posted a 10-3 triumph over the Rockies. He tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits, while walking three and striking out two. In a related move, the club recalled right-handed pitcher Roberto Novoa from Iowa of the Pacific Coast League. In two stints with the Triple-A affiliate, Novoa has posted a 1-1 mark with a 2.78 ERA and three saves.
