The Green Bay Packers will honor perennial All-Pro Reggie White by retiring his number at their first home game this season, the team announced Tuesday.
The Packers will unveil the defensive end's No. 92 during halftime of their September 18 game against the Cleveland Browns. The team made the decision last September, three months before White's untimely death of a heart condition on December 26.
"He was very honored," said Bob Harlan, president and CEO of the Packers. "I told him to look up there and picture his name with the other numbers. I said, 'You know, we've only done this four times in our history.' And he said, 'I know, I know.' He knew how special this was."
White ended his career as the NFL's all-time sack leader with 198, a mark surpassed by Bruce Smith last season. He played for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Packers from 1985-1998 and came out of retirement in 2000 to play for the Carolina Panthers.
"I had the utmost respect for Reggie White as a player," said Packers quarterback Brett Favre. "He may have been the best player I've ever seen and certainly was the best I've ever played with or against."
Known as the "Minister of Defense," White was a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He twice led the league in sacks, and his 21 for the Eagles in 1987 is tied for third place on the NFL's all-time single-season list. White will be eligible for the NFL Hall of Fame in February 2006.
