Federer to meet Coria in rematch of '04 Hamburg final

Defending champion Roger Federer and 2004 runner-up Guillermo Coria were among those posting third-round victories on Thursday, and the two stars will meet in Friday's quarterfinal action at the Hamburg Masters. The top-seeded/world No. 1 Federer blew out 14th-seeded Tommy Robredo 6-2, 6-3 on the red clay at Rothenbaum and improved to 6-0 lifetime against the capable Spaniard. The 23-year-old Federer, the reigning U.S. Open, Masters Cup and two-time Wimbledon champ, beat the Argentine Coria in last year's Hamburg finale and also titled here in 2002. Federer, who moved to 17-3 lifetime in Hamburg, is a brilliant 38-2 overall this year, including a co-ATP-leading five titles. The 2003 Hamburg titlist Coria, seeded 10th this week, dumped big-serving Croat Mario Ancic 6-4, 6-3 to improve to 14-1 in Hamburg. The 2004 French Open runner-up Coria lost to high-flying Spaniard Rafael Nadal in last week's Italian Masters final, as Nadal prevailed in five sets after more than five hours of dramatic tennis at Rome's Foro Italico. Coria also gave way to Nadal in the Monte-Carlo Masters final last month. Coria and Federer will meet for only the second time in their careers. The Swiss prevailed in four sets in last year's marquee championship match here. The upset of the day came when Belgian Christophe Rochus eliminated reigning French Open champion Gaston Gaudio of Argentina 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. The fourth- seeded Gaudio owns three clay-court titles already this year, including one in Portugal just two weeks ago. Fifteenth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko came from behind to bounce former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Ferrero had to play two qualifying rounds here after being refused a wild card. The 2003 French Open champion Ferrero was a Hamburg finalist in 2001. Another upset came when Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela dismissed fifth-seeded Englishman Tim Henman 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Henman saved five match points before missing an overhead smash on a sixth. The veteran Henman was a French and U.S. Open semifinalist last year. In other third-round play, Italian Filippo Volandri vaulted past Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean 6-3, 6-4; Italian Andreas Seppi subdued Czech Jiri Novak 6-3, 6-4; and French teen Richard Gasquet grounded Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty 6-1, 6-2. The 18-year-old Gasquet shocked the mighty Federer in Monte-Carlo last month. Friday's other quarters will pit Davydenko against Volandri, Gasquet versus Seppi and Rochus against Chela. The winner of this $2.67 million French Open tuneup will claim $436,000.
