Jets extend defensive coordinator Henderson

The New York Jets have extended the contract of defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson. As per team policy, terms of the deal were not released. Henderson completed his first season as defensive coordinator of the Jets, who allowed 16.3 points per game in 2004 and ranked seventh overall in the NFL in total defense. The club also finished fifth-best against the run and recorded 33 takeaways -- good enough for fourth in the league. "Donnie Henderson instilled a fire in our defensive unit that had an effect on the entire football team," said Jets head coach Herman Edwards. "His approach to coaching the defense set the tone at training camp last season and it's a credit to him and his coaching staff for making good players better and giving our young players an opportunity to contribute." Henderson, 47, joined the Jets in January 2004 after five years as defensive backs coach with the Baltimore Ravens. In his five seasons with the Ravens, Baltimore reached the playoffs three times, including winning the Super Bowl following the 2000 season. "Donnie puts players in position to be successful and that's the focus of us being a winning football team," Edwards added. Prior to breaking into NFL coaching back in 1999, Henderson coached 16 years on the collegiate level at five different schools. Henderson had stops at Utah State, Idaho, California, Arizona State and Houston. Henderson was a standout corner at Utah State before being drafted in 1980
