Colorado Rockies rookie shortstop Clint Barmes is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday for a fractured left clavicle.
The procedure will likely keep Barmes out of action for at least 12 weeks. Because of that, the Rockies placed him on the 60-day disabled list.
Barmes, who suffered the injury Sunday after falling on a flight of steps while carrying groceries in his home, will be operated on by Rockies medical director Dr. Thomas J. Noonan at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic.
The 26-year-old was leading National League rookies in almost every offensive category. He tops all NL first-year players with a .329 batting average, 40 runs scored, 74 hits, 16 doubles, eight homers, 34 RBI, 116 total bases and 22 multi-hit games.
Barmes' batting average is currently seventh overall in the NL.
In other team news, Colorado placed catcher Todd Greene on the 15-day DL with a strained right hamstring and purchased the contracts of catcher Danny Ardoin and infielder Tim Olson from Triple-A Colorado Springs. The Rockies also designated pitcher Randy Williams for assignment.
