Sharapova strolls in DFS opener

Reigning champion Maria Sharapova was an easy second-round winner Tuesday at the $200,000 DFS Classic -- a grass- court Wimbledon tune-up. The top-seeded Sharapova handled Luxembourg's Anne Kremer 6-3, 6-0 in her first action since losing to Justine Henin-Hardenne in last week's French Open quarterfinals. The 2004 Wimbledon titlist Sharapova defeated France's Tatiana Golovin in last year's all-teen final in Birmingham. She was a perfect 12-0 in the 2004 grass- court season after running the tables here and at the All England Club. Sharapova will meet an Aussie in the third round this week, either Evie Dominikovic or Samantha Stosur. In other second-round action, third-seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic bested Indian Sania Mirza 6-1, 7-5, while Anna Chakvetadze took out 12th-seeded fellow Russian Evgenia Linetskaya 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at Edgbaston Priory Club. Three seeds saw opening-round action on Day 2, as No. 10 Czech Nicole Vaidisova brushed aside Frenchwoman Stephanie Cohen-Aloro 6-3, 6-2 and No. 15 Russian Maria Kirilenko leveled Ukrainian Yuliana Fedak 6-3, 6-2, while Venezuelan Milagros Sequera toppled 14th-seeded American Lisa Raymond 6-1, 6-0. Additional first-round wins came for Aussies Nicole Pratt and Dominikovic, Greek Eleni Daniilidou, South African Natalie Grandin, Japan's Rika Fujiwara, Venezuelan Maria Vento-Kabchi, Americans Jamea Jackson, Laura Granville and Meilen Tu, and Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn. Dominikovic dismissed American Meghann Shaughnessy 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
