Last year's runner-up Tatiana Golovin of France was among Wednesday's second-round winners, while second-seeded Aussie Alicia Molik went by way of the upset at the $200,000 DFS Classic.
American Laura Granville grounded the world No. 9 Molik 6-4, 6-2, as the big- serving Aussie saw her first action in two months. Molik had been sidelined by an inner-ear infection which forced her to miss the French Open.
The fifth-seeded Golovin avoided an upset by handling South African Natalie Grandin 6-4, 7-5 on the grass courts at Edgbaston Priory Club. Golovin gave way to Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova in last year's Birmingham final.
Golovin will meet Japanese Rika Fujiwara here on Thursday.
Sixteenth-seeded Samantha Stosur set-up a third-round match with the top- seeded Sharapova by beating fellow Aussie Evie Dominikovic 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2) on Day 3.
Another top-10-seed upset occurred when Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja outlasted seventh-seeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5).
Sixth-seeded Japanese Shinobu Asagoe held off American Meilen Tu 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, while eighth-seeded Japanese Ai Sugiyama topped Aussie Nicole Pratt 7-5, 6-4.
Additional upsets came when Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn trounced No. 9 seed Marion Bartoli of France 6-3, 6-0; Greek Eleni Daniilidou drubbed No. 10 Czech Nicole Vaidisova 6-4, 6-2; American Mashona Washington knocked out No. 11 Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano 6-4, 3-6, 6-1; and American Jamea Jackson jumped past No. 15 Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 6-3. Jackson will face Granville in an all-American third-round bout here on Thursday.
Other second-round wins came for Fujiwara, Venezuelan Milagros Sequera and France's Stephanie Foretz.
