Will Winky be Wright to challenge Trinidad?

Felix "Tito" Trinidad will fight Ronald "Winky" Wright in a middleweight bout Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. "While many boxers avoid tough fights, Tito Trinidad always wants to fight the best," said promoter Don King in a release. "Tito has proven yet again he has the heart of a lion by agreeing to face the great world champion Winky Wright." The three-time world champion Trinidad returned to the ring on October 2 after a 29-month retirement and, before an electrified crowd at Madison Square Garden, registered an eight-round technical knockout against former unified welterweight champion Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga in a classic sluggest. The win improved his record 42-1 with 35 knockouts. Mayorga was sent to the canvas for the first time in his career with 1:20 left in the eighth from a left hand to the liver from Trinidad. Mayorga got to his feet at the count of nine, and took several more punches before hitting the deck again. After Mayorga hit the floor for a third time, Trinidad was declared the winner. It was Trinidad's first bout since he scored a fourth-round TKO of Hassine Cherifi on May 11, 2002 in his native Puerto Rico, a fight that came more than seven months after the only loss of his career -- a 12th-round knockout by Bernard Hopkins for the undisputed middleweight title. Wright, who has never been knocked out, moves up to the middleweight class for Saturday's fight. He defeated "Sugar" Shane Mosley to become the undisputed 154-pound world champion on March 13, 2004 and beat him again in a rematch on November 20. Wright is 48-3 with 25 KOs. After losing to Fernando Vargas in a controversial decision in 1999, Wright has won nine straight fights. "I'm the type of fighter that wants to fight for the people," Wright said. "I just want to fight, and when it's over, people will say that he fought and beat the best and should be considered one of the best." Also on Saturday, Zab Judah will put his WBC, WBA and IBF welterweight titles on the line against Cosme Rivera. Judah carries a record of 33-2 with 24 KOs into the ring and has won three straight fights since a loss to Cory Spinks on April 10, 2004. The Brooklyn, New York native avenged that setback with a ninth-round TKO of Spinks in his last bout on February 5. Rivera is 28-7-2 with 20 KOs. The native of Mexico has won seven straight fights against unheralded competition to earn this title shot.
