The Los Angeles Dodgers and pitcher Brad Penny agreed to a three-year contract extension on Sunday with a club option for a fourth year. Financial terms were not released, but earlier reports had the deal worth close to $32 million.
"Brad has proven that he is one of the top starters in the National League and that he has the ability to be a dominant presence for the Dodgers," said executive vice president and general manager Paul DePodesta.
The 27-year-old Penny was acquired by the Dodgers along with Hee-Seop Choi and Bill Murphy from Florida on July 30, 2004 in exchange for Juan Encarnacion, Paul Lo Duca and Guillermo Mota.
Penny had his season come to an end last year after just three starts with Los Angeles due to a right biceps injury. He finished 9-10 in 2004 with a 3.15 ERA in 24 combined starts for the Dodgers and Marlins.
This season, Penny has made 10 starts and is 3-2 with a 4.04 ERA.
