Wright dominates Trinidad

Winky Wright successfully defended his World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association junior middleweight belts with a one-sided unanimous 12-round decision over Felix "Tito" Trinidad at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Wright won by scores of 120-107, 119-108 and 119-108, and improved to 49-3 with 25 knockouts. The St. Petersburg, Florida, native landed more punches than anyone ever has against Trinidad. "I think they underestimated me a bit," said Wright. "He didn't think I'd be that strong. I give him credit, he took some big shots and kept coming. "I told you all a long time ago they were running from me. All the critics, you must hush, and give me my props." Wright's right jab completely dominated the action. Wright landed 185-of-588 jabs in the bout, most of them solid shots that kept Trinidad off balance for the entire match. Wright landed 262 of 756 total punches, compared to Trinidad, who landed just 58 of 557 attempts. "It was a tough fight," said Trinidad. "I knew that Winky would come in top condition, and he did. He had a beautiful jab and it reached me a lot." The 33-year-old Trinidad, who came into the bout as the favorite, fell to 42-2 with 35 knockouts. There were no knockdowns in the bout, and neither fighter appeared to be hurt at any juncture. Trinidad had a point taken away from him because of a low blow in the late going, but it obviously did not factor into the decision. This was Wright's first bout since beating Shane Mosley for the second time on November 20, 2004. On the undercard, Zab Judah annihilated Cosme Rivera via a third-round knockout to defend his undisputed welterweight title. Judah floored Rivera with a crushing straight left just 30 seconds into the bout, and knocked him down again in the third before the referee called a halt to the bout at 2:11 of the round. Judah improved to 34-2 with 25 knockouts. Rivera fell to 28-8-2.
