Yankees to announce stadium plans

The New York Yankees will hold a press conference Wednesday to announce detailed plans for a new stadium in the Bronx, which they hope to have ready by 2009. According to previous reports, the new 50,800-seat park will be built on a site adjacent to the current stadium, just north between 161st and 164th streets and between Jerome and River avenues. Also, the new stadium will be made up of two separate structures: an exterior wall, designed to replicate the original Yankee Stadium built in 1923, and the interior stadium itself, which will rise above the exterior. The new stadium is also expected to feature copper lattice work around the roof, the way it was in the 1923 stadium. The signature lattice facade was painted white during the 1960s, as it now appears above the outfield. But the new stadium will return to the original copper. Expanded retail and concession areas will also be available in the new stadium. Approximately $800 million for the stadium itself will be shelled out by the Yankees with the state kicking in nearly $300 million for a new Metro- North train station, green space along the now run-down waterfront and better parking facilities around the stadium. Capacity for the new stadium will be nearly 7,000 less than the current one, but the new park will feature more luxury suites.
