Giants continue roster shuffling

The San Francisco Giants have placed third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo and outfielder Marquis Grissom on the 15-day disabled list. Alfonzo suffered a left quadriceps strain during this past Sunday's game against Cleveland, while Grissom is back on the DL with a left hamstring strain. Grissom was just activated on June 4 after recovering from a right knee contusion. Having, perhaps, his best season in three years with the Giants, Alfonzo is batting .306 with 30 runs batted in but has just two home runs. Grissom is hitting a measly .211 with two homers and 14 RBI. The Giants filled the roster spots Tuesday, for the start of a three-game series in Minnesota, by recalling outfielder Todd Linden from Triple-A Fresno and purchasing the contract of outfielder Adam Shabala from Fresno. San Francisco manager Felipe Alou, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, will likely move Pedro Feliz from the outfield to third base, which will free up a starting spot for Linden. Feliz, an infielder by trade, moved into left field at the start of this season for the injured Barry Bonds. The Giants had previously stated they would not bring up Linden from the minors unless he had an everyday spot. Linden was hitting a torrid .326 at Fresno and was tied for the Pacific Coast League lead with 19 homers while leading the loop with 58 runs batted in. In 34 games over two previous major league call-ups during the past two seasons, the 24-year-old Linden has batted just .186 with a homer and seven runs batted in. Shabala, 27, has never played in the majors and was in his second year at Triple-A. He hit .314 last season at Fresno and this year was batting .287 with nine homers and 22 runs batted in. The Giants also made roster moves this past weekend, releasing pitcher Jim Brower and designating pitcher Al Levine for assignment. Jesse Foppert was recalled from Fresno to take Brower's roster spot and is slated to start the opener of the series Tuesday against the Twins.
