The Detroit Tigers have placed shortstop Carlos Guillen on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 8. Guillen is suffering from a pulled hamstring.
Guillen's season was cut short last year when he had surgery on the ACL in his right knee. He suffered the injury on September 11 against the Minnesota Twins sliding into third base. Guillen ended the campaign hitting .318 with 20 homers and 97 RBI. The 2004 All-Star set career-highs in each of those categories.
Also Tuesday, outfielder Marcus Thames was optioned to Triple A Toledo and the contracts of infielder Jason Smith and outfielder Alexis Gomez were purchased from the minor league affiliate. Additionally, the Tigers have moved right- handed pitcher Gary Knotts from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list
Smith opened the season with the Tigers and batted .214 (9-for-42) in 21 games.
