Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Cesar Izturis has moved into the lead among National League shortstops in the latest balloting results for the 76th All-Star Game, which will be played on Tuesday July 12 at Comerica Park.
Izturis had been fourth at his position in last week's results, trailing leader Nomar Garciaparra, who has spent a majority of the season on the disabled list.
However, this week, the 25-year-old Izturis leads all shortstops with 469,967 votes, just over 11,000 more than the St. Louis Cardinals' David Eckstein. Garciaparra, meanwhile, has slipped to third.
Izturis, who picked up his first Gold Glove last season, is batting .310 with a homer and 20 RBI. His 28 multi-hit games this season are also the most in baseball.
Other NL position leaders include first baseman Albert Pujols (1,029,836) of the Cardinals; second baseman Jeff Kent (774,468) of the Dodgers; third baseman Scott Rolen (752,471) of the Cardinals; catcher Mike Piazza (760,342) of the New York Mets; and outfielders Carlos Beltran (877,677) of the Mets, Jim Edmonds (768,962) of the Cardinals and Bobby Abreu (678,353) of the Philadelphia Phillies.
