Top-seeded Maria Sharapova was upset in three sets by Patty Schnyder in Saturday's semifinals of the $1.3 million Italian Masters.
The eighth-seeded Schnyder dropped the first set against her Russian opponent, but stormed back to take the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. The reigning Wimbledon champion Sharapova could have supplanted American Lindsay Davenport atop the WTA Tour rankings with a title this weekend.
The Swiss Schnyder, who is in search of her second WTA Tour singles title of 2005 and the 10th of her career, will face second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France in Sunday's championship match.
Mauresmo captured the other semifinal on Saturday with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over sixth-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva. The 25-year-old Mauresmo improved to 7-0 lifetime against the 20-year-old Zvonareva.
Mauresmo will appear in her fifth Rome final in six years. She beat American Jennifer Capriati in last year's Italian Masters final and was the runner-up here in 2000, 2001 and 2003. Mauresmo has 16 career singles titles to her credit, including one this year.
The winner of this French Open tuneup will collect $189,000.
