House That George Built: Yankees announce new stadium plans

The New York Yankees held a press conference Wednesday to announce detailed plans for a new stadium in the Bronx, which they hope to start construction on in 2006 and have ready by 2009. Yankees principal owner George Steinbrenner, New York Governor George Pataki and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg were all in attendance, as plans were unveiled at the Stadium Club of the current park. The new park, which will seat between 50,000-to-54,000, will be built in Macombs Dam and Mullaly parks, just north of the current stadium, which was built in 1923 and is the third oldest park in the majors behind Fenway Park (1912) and Wrigley Field (1914). Also, the new stadium will be made up of two separate structures: an exterior wall, designed to replicate the original Yankee Stadium, and the interior stadium itself, which will rise above the exterior. The new stadium is also expected to feature copper lattice work around the roof, the way it was in the 1923 stadium. The signature lattice facade was painted white during the 1960s, as it now appears above the outfield, but the new stadium will return to the original copper. Expanded retail and concession areas will also be available in the new stadium. Approximately $800 million for the stadium itself will be shelled out by the Yankees with the city and state kicking in nearly $200 million for a new Metro- North train station, green space along the now run-down waterfront and better parking facilities around the stadium. "The Yankees, not the taxpayers, will pay to construct this project," Yankees president Randy Levine said. "The Yankees, not the taxpayers, will pay to maintain it." Capacity for the new stadium could be nearly 7,000 less than the current one, which holds 57,745 fans, but the new park will feature more luxury suites. Also in the current stadium, 20,000 of the seats are on the lower level with 30,000 up top. In the new stadium those numbers will be reversed. The Kansas City architectural firm HOK Sport, which has built several of the newer stadiums in the league including Camden Yards in Baltimore, PNC Park in Pittsburgh and Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
