New York Yankees righthander Kevin Brown left his team's dramatic 7-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday because of back spasms.
Brown, who started the season on the disabled list with a strained back, pitched 4 1/3 innings and left after allowing an RBI single to reigning NL Rookie of the Year Jason Bay.
The 40-year-old hurler yielded three runs on seven hits before leaving. On the season, he is 4-6 with a 5.43 ERA.
New York managed to win the contest on Jason Giambi's 10th inning, two-run homer after rallying from a 4-1 deficit. The win was the first for New York when trailing after eight innings (1-30).
Injuries are nothing new for the oft-injured Brown, who found himself on the DL for nearly two months last season with a strained lower back and an intestinal parasite. He also suffered a pair of broken bones in his left hand after punching a clubhouse wall following a September 3 start against Baltimore.
Brown returned for the final week of the regular season and pitched in the 2004 playoffs. He earned the win in Game 3 of the AL Division Series against Minnesota, but struggled against Boston in the AL Championship Series and was tagged with the loss in the decisive seventh game.
