Michelle Wie's attempt at playing in the U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst took a blow Friday as she carded a four-over 76 to share sixth place in a local qualifier at the Turtle Bay Resort.
Wie ran off four straight bogeys on the front nine, but rebounded on the back side. She managed birdies at the 12th and 16th, but tripped to another bogey at the 13th.
The 15-year-old was trying to secure one of four spots available for the sectional qualifier in Rockville, Maryland.
The two players she was tied with - Andrew Feldmann and Norman Asao - had left Turtle Bay so there was no playoff to determine the order of alternate status for those three players. Since Wie was still at the course, she was declared the second alternate.
Pierre-Henri Soero was the medalist at two-under 70, while Regan Lee took the second spot with an even-par 72. Joe Phengsavath and Shizuo Mori grabbed the third and fourth qualifying spaces with rounds of one-over 73.
Kevin Hayashi posted a two-over 74 and was installed as the first alternate.
Wie has already secured a spot in the final three majors on the LPGA Tour. With her tie for 13th at last year's U.S. Women's Open, Wie qualified for this year's Open at Cherry Hills in Denver.
The Hawaiian was given exemptions into the McDonald's LPGA Championship at Bulle Rock and the Women's British Open at Royal Birkdale.
Wie claimed her lone title at the 2003 Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. She was just 13 years old when she won that crown and became the youngest winner in any USGA championship.
