LA Angels of Anaheim reliever Brendan Donnelly was suspended for 10 days on Friday after illegal substances were found in his glove during a June 14 game against Washington.
The incident occurred during Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the Nationals at Angels Stadium. Washington manager Frank Robinson requested the umpires check Donnelly's glove before he threw a pitch in the seventh inning.
Upon the inspection, umpires found pine tar on the glove, violating rule 8.02b, which prohibits a pitcher from having a foreign substance on his person or equipment.
Donnelly has appealed the suspension and will continue playing until the hearing process is complete.
Robinson and Angels manager Mike Scioscia have also been suspended one game apiece and fined undisclosed amounts for their aggressive and inappropriate actions during the game, which resulted in the benches clearing during the inning.
Robinson has appealed his suspension while Scioscia is scheduled to begin his against Florida on Friday night.
