The Arizona Diamondbacks placed starting pitcher Russ Ortiz on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a right rib cage strain.
Ortiz is 4-6 with a 5.88 ERA in 14 starts this season. He suffered the injury in his last start, June 15 in Chicago against the White Sox, and after trying to throw on Friday found that his side was bothering him too much.
He will undergo more tests when the Diamondbacks return home after finishing out a three-game set in Cleveland and a series in San Francisco.
Arizona also designated pitcher Matt Herges for assignment, recalled pitcher Mike Koplove from Triple-A Tucson and purchased the contract of pitcher Brandon Medders from Tucson.
Herges was acquired from the San Francisco Giants on June 3 and posted a lofty 13.50 ERA in seven appearances with the Diamondbacks. In 21 games combined with the Giants and Diamondbacks, Herges was 1-1 with a 7.14 ERA.
Koplove, 28, returns to the Diamondbacks after being initially optioned to Tucson on June 9. He made 30 appearances for Arizona prior to his option, going 2-1 with a 5.06 ERA. While with the Sidewinders, Koplove appeared in four games, going 0-1 with a 5.00 ERA.
Medders, 25, went 2-1 with seven saves and a 1.80 ERA with Tucson.
