Ryan Newman captured the pole for Sunday's Batman Begins 400 at the Michigan International Speedway. The No.12 Penske Racing Dodge circled the two-mile oval in a record 37.069 seconds (194.232 m.p.h.).
The old mark was 37.667 seconds (191.149 m.p.h.) set in August 2000 by Dale Earnhardt Jr.
The pole victory was Newman's series-leading fifth of the season and 32nd of his 131-race Cup career.
"I'm happy for the Alltel Dodge team, the guys have done an excellent job in giving me a fast race car," said Newman.
Starting on the front row with "The King of Qualifying" will be Casey Mears, who posted a second-best time of 37.160 seconds.
Tony Stewart (27.207) and Kasey Kahne (37.282) will start in row two. Jeremy Mayfield (37.289) completed the top-five.
A total of 26 drivers broke the old track record.
Series points leader Jimmie Johnson is 16th in the 43-car field. He owns a 123-point margin over second-place Greg Biffle.
Other qualifying positions include; Jeff Gordon (ninth), 2004 Series champion Kurt Busch (13th), Pocono 500 winner Carl Edwards (23rd), Biffle (25th) and Earnhardt Jr. (42nd).
For Edwards, it is his second appearance in Michigan. He made his Nextel Cup debut with a 10th-place finish last August.
Roush Racing (seven wins) and Hendrick Motorsports (five wins) have dominated the 2005 season through 14 races. Only Kahne (Richmond) and Kevin Harvick (Bristol) have broken through their stranglehold of Victory Lane.
