Pittsburgh Pirates ace Oliver Perez will miss his scheduled start on Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants with soreness in his left shoulder.
Perez had been shelved with a similar injury in spring training and began feeling the same tightness in his shoulder following Friday's start against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
"I started feeling sore and tight," said Perez. "The next day (Saturday) I was feeling the same. I couldn't sleep good."
Perez has struggled mightily in the early stages of the season and is just 1-4 with a 8.03 earned run average.
"He feels a lot of pressure," said Pittsburgh pitching coach Spin Williams. "He was our Opening Day starter and he wanted to do real good. He just kept putting more pressure on himself. Maybe this little tenderness is a blessing in disguise if we can get him back and fit him in where we want to fit him in."
Josh Fogg will now start on Wednesday in the finale of the three-game set on just three days' rest.
"I don't throw 100 mph so I don't really put much wear and tear on my arm when I'm out there," said Fogg. "I'm more of a control pitcher, more of a sinkerballer. Sinkerballers are usually better when they are a little tired."
