The Chicago White Sox placed starting pitcher Orlando Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder, marking the second trip to the DL in a month for the Cuban righthander.
"El Duque" was just recalled from the disabled list on June 3 and had three starts since his return. Hernandez made his last start on June 14 against Arizona and was touched for six runs in just 4 2/3 innings in that outing.
An MRI taken on Saturday revealed nothing, but Hernandez still complained of tightness.
"His shoulder looks stable, and he had a good exam," said White Sox athletic trainer Herm Schneider. "It's not in serious areas, but for whatever reason, to him, it just doesn't feel strong enough."
Hernandez, who signed a two-year, $8 million deal in the offseason, is 7-2 with a 4.88 ERA in 11 starts this year.
The White Sox have recalled Brandon McCarthy from Triple-A Charlotte and the 21-year-old righthander is expected to start Monday's game versus Kansas City. McCarthy was also recalled during Hernandez's last stint on the DL and went 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA in two starts.
