Biffle earns fifth win at Michigan

Greg Biffle led another Jack Roush Racing charge and went on to capture Sunday's Batman Begins 400 at the Michigan International Speedway. The No.16 Ford crossed the finish line 1.675 seconds ahead of Tony Stewart. The victory was Biffle's fifth of the season and eighth of his Nextel Cup career. Roush Racing teammates Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Roush Racing drivers have now combined for eight wins through the first 15 events: Biffle - 5, Edwards - 2, Kurt Busch - 1. "This No.16 team is working really hard," said Biffle. "We have great race cars and I'm really focused as a driver. I just love this racetrack and the fans are awesome. It's the 100th win for Ford Taurus." Meanwhile, series points leader Jimmie Johnson finished a disappointing 19th and his lead is just 49 points over Biffle. It didn't appear to be a Roush afternoon early on at the two-mile Michigan oval. Tony Stewart was the man to beat and the Joe Gibbs Racing driver led a race- high 97 laps. At the mid-point his lead over Biffle was 1.825 seconds and he could pass cars both high and low on the track. But Biffle's crew kept working on his Ford and just past the halfway mark began to make gains on Stewart. The two drivers were well in front of the field at this point - more than seven seconds. Following a Sterling Marlin blown engine which brought out the fourth and final caution on lap 167, Stewart brought his Chevrolet in for four tires. Biffle and the rest of his Roush teammates stayed out on the track, knowing they had enough fuel to reach the finish and gambling that Stewart couldn't work his way through the field. It was just the opposite of what happen last night in the Busch race at the Kentucky Speedway. In that one, Edwards made the decision to get new tires, fought his way past 18 cars and went on to win the race. Stewart restarted in eighth place, but because it was not a single file restart meant he had to get around a total of 16 cars if he wanted to make the trip to Victory Lane. When the green flag dropped with 27 laps to go, Stewart got up on the wheel and showed his skills. He passed Michael Waltrip and Elliott Sadler on the first lap and Joe Nemechek on the second one. Another lap and he passed the first of the Roush cars in 2004 Nextel Cup champion Kurt Busch. He made his way past Edwards for third place and had just Matt Kenseth and Biffle to go. But his tires began to fade and it took him almost a dozen laps to get by Kenseth. By that time Biffle owned a two-second lead and Stewart had no shot at the win. "We just came up short, but it was an awesome run," said Stewart. Stewart's second-place finished helped him make the biggest move in the standings - up four positions to sixth place. With 11 races left in the "regular season," there are still 11 drivers eligible for the "Chase for the Nextel Cup." The next event is scheduled for the Infineon Raceway on Sunday, June 26th.
