Royals' Sweeney put on DL

Kansas City announced Monday that first baseman Mike Sweeney has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left wrist and elbow. The move is retroactive to June 16. Sweeney first suffered the injury in the fourth inning of last Wednesday's game against Los Angeles after stretching in attempts of catching a throw from third baseman Mark Teahen. However, Jayson Werth ran into his non-throwing hand as he crossed first base and Sweeney immediately dropped his glove in obvious pain. He then had an MRI, which revealed a ligament tear in the wrist although the tear had apparently been in that area for a couple of years. Sweeney, who has missed the last four games, had a cortisone shot on Sunday, but the pain did not subside and he had trouble taking non-contact swings prior to the game. The 31-year-old Sweeney, who is on the disabled list for the for the first time this year, also missed five games earlier in the season with a rib-cage problem. On the season, he is hitting .299 with nine homers and 37 RBI. In other team news, the Royals placed pitchers Jeremy Affeldt (strained left groin) and Ambiorix Burgos (strained rotator cuff) on the 15-disabled list. Affeldt has an ERA of 3.86 after allowing five earned runs and 12 hits over 11 2/3 innings this season, while Burgos has two saves and a 4.44 ERA in 24 1/3 frames. The team called up lefthander Jimmy Gobble from Triple-A Omaha and first baseman Justin Huber from Double-A Wichita.
