Atlanta Braves outfielder Kelly Johnson was named the National League Player of the Week on Monday.
Johnson led the league with 11 RBI for the week of June 13-19. The lefthanded- hitting rookie also hit .417 with three homers, an .833 slugging percentage and .533 on-base percentage.
His week was highlighted by a two-homer, six-RBI performance at Cincinnati on June 17. It was only the fourth time in Atlanta team history that a rookie had six RBI in one game. Johnson collected three multi-RBI games and becomes the first rookie to win the NL's Player of the Week award since Noah Lowry of the Giants did so last year (August 2-8).
Other nominees for the award included Atlanta teammates Wilson Betemit, Julio Franco and Andruw Jones; Chicago's Jeromy Burnitz, Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez; Chris Carpenter, Albert Pujols and Abraham Nunez of the Cardinals; Arizona's Troy Glaus and Shawn Estes; Lyle Overbay and Tomo Ohka of the Brewers; San Francisco's Omar Vizquel and Michael Tucker; Jimmy Rollins of the Phillies; Colorado's Eddy Garabito; Ryan Klesko of the Padres; Florida's Luis Castillo and Cristian Guzman of the Nationals.
