The leading vote-getters at all eight National League All-Star positions remained unchanged according to the latest balloting results released Tuesday, although the gap is starting to close in some races.
The tightest battle remains at shortstop, where Cesar Izturis of the Los Angeles Dodgers bests St. Louis' David Eckstein by a mere 65,000 votes. Izturis, who overtook injured Chicago Cubs star Nomar Garciaparra last week, has garnered 677,260 votes to Eckstein's 611,803.
Chicago's Derrek Lee, hitting a league-best .389 thus far, has cut into the advantage of St. Louis' Albert Pujols at first base as well. Pujols still tops all NL players with 1,283,047 votes, with Lee second with 1,117,634 votes. Pujols had nearly a 315,000-vote cushion over Lee a week ago.
New York Mets teammates Mike Piazza (908,968) and Carlos Beltran (1,047,531) remain on top at catcher and in the outfield, respectively. St. Louis' Jim Edmonds (972,720) and Philadelphia's Bobby Abreu (965,805) are also still in front in the race for the final two outfield spots.
Second baseman Jeff Kent (1,015,097) of the Dodgers and third baseman Scott Rolen (941,631) of St. Louis remain in first place at their positions.
