The Baltimore Orioles placed veteran outfielder B.J. Surhoff on the 15-day disabled with a strained rib muscle prior to Wednesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. In a corresponding move, the O's recalled outfielder David Newhan from Triple-A Ottawa to take Surhoff's spot.
Surhoff, now in his 19th season in the majors, is hitting.288 with four homers and 19 RBI in 42 games this year for Baltimore.
In other news, Baltimore third baseman Melvin Mora missed Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. Mora suffered a right hamstring injury running to first on a grounder to shortstop in Tuesday's game against the Jays. He is listed as day-to-day.
