Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona and St. Louis Cardinals skipper Tony La Russa Wednesday named the coaches for their respective squads for the 2005 All-Star Game to be played in Detroit's Comerica Park on July 12.
Francona named Alan Trammell of the Detroit Tigers and Ken Macha of the Oakland Athletics to the American League bench. Both will be making their first All-Star appearance as coaches.
Joining La Russa will be Felipe Alou of the San Francisco Giants and Ned Yost of the Milwaukee Brewers. Alou, who has won the most games of any Latino manager in Major League history, was NL manager in the 1995 Mid-Summer Classic but will be making his first coaching appearance. Yost will also be making his first coaching assignment, but as an Atlanta coach under Bobby Cox, was part of the NL All-Star staff in 1992-93, 1996-97 and 2000.
The two All-Star managers also invited members of their current coaching staffs to assist in batting practice and other field duties. Francona also named the trainers of the host Tigers, Kevin Rand and Steve Carter, to the staff. Trainers Barry Weinberg of the Cardinals and Mark Mann of the Cincinnati Reds will complete the NL All-Star staff.
