The San Diego Padres placed starting pitcher Adam Eaton and catcher Ramon Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.
Eaton was placed on the DL retroactive to last Thursday after suffering a strained flexor tendon in his middle finger during a loss at Detroit the previous day.
The 27-year-old righthander suffered his first loss in nearly two months against the Tigers. He is 9-2 with a 3.42 ERA in 14 starts this season and ranks fourth in the National League in wins.
The NL West-leading Padres will also be without starting catcher Hernandez, who sprained his wrist while sliding back to first base in an extra-inning loss at Minnesota last Friday.
Like Eaton, Hernandez is having a strong year. At the time of his injury, he was leading all major league catchers in hits (66) and innings caught (509 1/3) and was tied for first in games started (59).
The 29-year-old backstop is batting .280 with seven homers and 33 runs batted in this season.
To fill the roster spots, the Padres recalled right-handed starter Tim Redding from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Portland and reinstated him from the 15- day disabled list, and also recalled outfielder Paul McAnulty from Double-A Mobile.
Redding, who was placed on the disabled list May 9 with a strained right shoulder, is 0-5 with an 8.76 ERA in seven games with the Padres this season. He yielded just one earned run in 10 rehab innings over two starts.
McAnulty was the franchise's 2004 Minor League Player of the Year.
